The Tula manufacture was especially renowed for crafting utilitary steel objects with great virtuosity during the 18th and 19th centuries. By the 1750s the Tula armourers attained such perfection that they turned to the manufacture of folding furniture. Articles made from Tula steel were intended mainly for palaces, notably the furnishing of the Pavlovsk palace.

This paperweight is an exemple of the great quality of those utilitary objects with a molded and finely chiselled steel sculpture.
