Lion.
Ormolu, rosso antico, Carrara marble.
Italy, 18th century.
H. 8 - L. 8,5 - W. 8 cm.
This bronze lion represented nonchalantly lying on its terrace has undoubtedly been made by a talented artist as evidenced by the quality of the work, the anatomical details of the animal and the gilding. It is most likely a part of a surtout, as those created by the Valadier brothers during the eighteenth century, which are distinguished by an exquisite association between various species of marble and small sculptures in ormolu.
