In french, this type of mirror is named « witch mirror ». It was invented during the 15th century for the merchants and notably the bankers for keeping a close eye on their clients in their shop without moving. When its use spread to the rich homes, it was nicknamed « witch’s eye » by the domestics who felt constantly spied on. That is why it is called « witch mirror » today.
